Expectations Confronted: First Encounters with British University Life
Mrs Renata Seredynska-Abou Eid
CELE, School of Education, University of Nottingham
International Students of non-European origin who come to study in the UK may face a range of issues related to studies and everyday matters. Provided this is their first visit to Britain, adaptation may involve all aspects of life. If they are familiar with Western lifestyle, adapting to university life and academic requirements seems to be challenging. This talk is going to focus on aspects of student life in the UK that CELE students find difficult. Those issues range from class organisation, teacher-student relations, and time management to trivial and unpredictable aspects like the weather. All the information included in the presentation comes from either class conversations or informal chats with students. There has not been any formal research conducted yet as that would require some greater involvement and resources. Also, confidentiality is not an issue as only information students were confident to reveal is going to be mentioned and students’ identity will remain confidential.
